-- GOALS --
FOCUS ON YOUR FUTURE

In our professional development workshops and presentations, we constantly remind people to focus on their goals. When you have goals, you can make decisions more easily because you will see how those decisions will affect the achievement of your goals.

Here's an example -- Sherry has a goal to speak at more conferences. Keeping this in mind, Sherry takes steps to realize that goal:

  • She belongs to Tourism Regina, who provides informational updates on conferences coming to Regina. She then connects with conference planners.
  • She regularly buys an updated book of associations and calls the associations to offer her speaking services.
  • She constantly updates her material to keep it fresh and of value to her audiences. This research is ongoing.

Develop your goals -- that's the easy part! Write them down! Keep them in focus! Look for opportunities to make your goals realities. This need not be a major undertaking -- small steps can and will take you to the future you envision!

Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will themselves not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die.

PERSONAL DAYS

Companies that institute "Personal Days" rather than sick days find employees being more responsible. And, as an owner, manager or supervisor, you have fewer frustrations. People take time off for sickness, personal appointments, parent/teacher interviews, funerals or just because they feel they deserve the day off.

At your next staff meeting, why not discuss the merits of this new approach? The value?

  • You allow staff to honestly choose time off.
  • It may cut the number of days your staff takes off in a year.
  • Attendance at work may improve.
  • Those who are never sick get rewarded by having the opportunity to catch up and to enjoy some personal time.
  • You will feel better knowing you don't have to "police" the system.
