Handling Change

Most of us think about change from a negative perspective. In reality, it isn’t change that causes us difficulty, it’s the transition from one to the other that causes difficulty.

My grandfather, a Manitoba farmer, lost his arm above the elbow in a farming accident. Initially, he was unable to do anything without the use of his two hands. Eventually, though, he learned to do everything, including driving all over North America, pulling a trailer and parking it. The only things he couldn’t do were roll his own cigarettes and tie his shoe laces. Was it easy? I doubt it! I'm sure, though, it got easier every day.

Change is tough — it’s up to us to make it fun so we can cope with the hard work of change. Think of ways to do that:

1. Appoint one person as the “Fun General”.
2. Shut down early one day a month for a pot luck, picnic, lunch, etc.
3. Build the celebrations of small successes into every strategic plan right at the beginning.
