  DEVELOPING
  THE THINKING
  ORGANIZATION

   -- STAFF VALUES --

s time progresses, we realize more and more the need to involve people in developing our organization. This need did not simply evolve — our younger generation has demanded it. So while there may be times when we want more control, the reality is, in order to meet our goals, we need to get everyone thinking.

To begin, we need to examine the values our people have. With these values intact, we can move our organization forward.

Today a title does not automatically garner respect — it must be earned! And how does one do that today? EMPATHY. As always, one must create rapport with people. Remember, staff members are our customers, too. We want to treat them like customers. When we empathize with people, the door is open for them to trust our leadership.

Today, people want to be part of the team. When all are treated as team members, they feel a certain COMMITMENT to the organization and the projects involved. When people know the direction the organization is heading, they can more readily become idea-centred and look for new ways to reach organizational goals. People like challenges to be put forward in a positive manner. A clear vision is paramount before you can expect commitment.

KNOWLEDGE has changed! People still want to learn; the difference is, today the way we learn has changed. The internet allows everyone a more level playing field — almost every business today is computer connected and this provides access to new information quickly. As well, all staff members can share valuable knowledge — whether recent school learning or experience from years of work — to get everyone thinking along different lines with the same organizational goals and objectives in mind.

When thinking starts — by everyone in the organization — the prize will be results!

Our next issue will discuss the role of change in Developing a Thinking Organization...stay tuned!
