  DEVELOPING
  THE THINKING
  ORGANIZATION

This sixth and final instalment of our series deals with the importance of communication in a thinking organization.

(Here are Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5 if you missed them.)

Communication

ou’ve got all the processes established to ensure your company is on the right track to become a learning organization. Now comes the key – can you communicate this throughout the organization?

Your management team will be the ones who initiate the learning processes. Consider these questions:

  • Do your managers share information willingly?
  • Do your managers offer to assist others?
  • Do your managers show their commitment?

By ensuring your managers are establishing good communication techniques, there is more opportunity for the rest of the staff to communicate well. Role models help a great deal to establish positive linkages.

Some key areas where good communication is necessary:

  • Informal meetings to share information
  • Benchmarking best practices
  • Focusing on customer values
  • Examining key competencies of top performers
  • Identifying problem areas and seeking out solutions

t is everyone’s responsibility to take their learning throughout the organization. How can you make this happen?

Will there be bulletin boards for information

sharing, regular meetings, opportunities to teach what’s been learned, email postings, etc.?

s well as the organizational communication processes, you must examine the personal communication between individual members of the organization. This might include reading, writing, presenting, dealing with conflict. All of these areas may need to be included in the key learning processes.

As we develop thinking organizations, people will be outside the box. This can be distressing for everyone. Providing your people with the tools to work and communicate most effectively with others may assist in creating a more unified workforce.
