Summer Sanity

Summer is a relaxing time when people decide to take holidays. Well, it’s supposed to be!

The reality is that many people find summer extremely stressful. First of all, there’s the scramble to find out whether everyone can get the days off he or she wants. You also have to co-ordinate this with the schedules of your partner, the kids and maybe even the grandparents, if they are looking after the young ones.

Then, of course, there is the concern regarding how everything will get done at work while you are away. Most companies don’t hire another person during holiday time. They merely spread the extra work around.

So, what can you do to make your life a little more sane over the summer? These few ideas may help:

AT WORK

  • Meet with the person who will cover for you while you are away. Pass over the key things that need to be done, along with information about where to find important items.
  • If you are the one at work covering for someone else, plan your day carefully – keep your “to-do” lists organized and do the key items only.
  • Write your “to-do” list for the next day during the last five minutes of the day. Include no more than seven items.

AT HOME

  • Take a real break – don’t call the office or read business email. People take one week to unwind, one week to relax and then start to gear up for work again. If possible, take three weeks holidays and get a real break.
  • Plan one activity for the kids everyday and ensure you have the equipment and materials organized. Make the plan on Saturday and buy what you need then. Put everything for each day into separate bags and store until needed.
  • Plan a quiet time for half an hour each evening – everyone gets to read, nap, put together a puzzle, or whatever quiet activity they like. No talking allowed. Then try a reward afterwards; perhaps a bonfire, ice cream or a walk in the park.
  • Be organized – put everything away where it belongs when you are finished with it. This causes less frustration when someone is looking for something and frees up time that would normally be used tidying up.

Now, take three deep breaths and hold them for a count of eight. It’s a start to a happy summer!

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time." -- Sir John Lubbock
