As
the year marches by, people quiver and quake.
They wonder and worry about what it will take
to finish the jobs and the work and tasks,
all of duties about which the boss asks.
No
need to worry and quake in despair.
The tool to help you find time is right there!
Let go of the reins, the need to control
and delegate to all who fit the role.
This
may sound like a simple solution. However, some of us have a problem
with delegating. You may feel the work won't be done properly,
to your standards; or, it will be done so well you'll be out of
a job; or, people will think you're lazy or don't have the ability
if you give away some of your work.
Those
are not good reasons to refuse to delegate. Delegation is the
sign of a good manager, someone who knows the skills and abilities
of the people in the office, someone who trusts these people to
do a good job and someone who has the skill and patience to train
and coach people to excel in their delegated work.
As
you decide to delegate, think about the work you have which would
be done more efficiently by someone with more skill in that area,
be done less expensively if somebody else did it, or work that
others have expressed interest in. Don't just pass off the work
you don't like. Give them important work that they can take pride
in.
Work
with your people as they develop new skills to handle the tasks
you have delegated. Soon, they'll not need your help or coaching
anymore, and you will have the time you need to concentrate on
the work which needs your personal touch.
As
your staffs' competence grows in various areas, your competence
as a manager will grow as well.
Did
you find some more time? Can you now concentrate
on the important stuff that had to wait?
Sit back, put your feet up, relax in the glory
of how delegation works. (That's the end of my story.)
