Stand Above the Crowd

Stand Above the Crowd - Feb 2003 Knight Views from Dimension 11 Ltd.We all want to excel at what we do, whether that's as an Account Executive, Administrative Assistant, Entrepreneur, Farmer or Photographer. In our careers, we want to do well and we want to advance. Sometimes the competition for promotion or new business is fierce. How can we stand out above all others in our field? What do we need to do to be noticed and get that promotion or new account?

Here are a few things to consider. They certainly won't hurt your career, and they may just get you moving to where you picture yourself in the future.

  1. Be seen. Participate in committees at work. The powers that be will notice you taking an active role in the organization. Join associations in your line of work. This enables you to improve your expertise, as well as grow your network of contacts involved in the same career as you. Maybe you will hear of a job opportunity before others do.

  2. Become known as an expert. Believe in yourself and your own unique expertise. Take credit for the work you do and make sure people know you are the one who did it. Read books, take classes, anything to help you increase your knowledge about your field of work. Help others out who don't know as much or can't do as well as you do. This will quickly get you noticed as an expert in your field.

  3. Be a "generalist". Learn the skills needed to do a variety of jobs. If you are asked to help out or fill in occasionally, do so. This will identify you as someone willing to go the extra mile, someone eager to get the job done, someone with the ability to learn. Decision makers like that.

  4. Dress the part. Career casual has gone a little too far in some places. Dress the way the experts in your field dress. Take care of your appearance and you give the impression you care about your work.

With some hard work and dedication, you will stand above the crowd, one step closer to realizing your career aspirations.

Reach Your Goals

o, we were talking about successfully reaching goals. Naturally, the first thing you have to do is make goals, being very specific about what you want. The should answer the questions what, when and how.

Ho-hum goal: I want to advance in my career.

Great goal: I want to improve my computer skills so I will qualify for the assistant web designer position opening in August. I will register for the XYZ course at SIAST, which starts March 15.

This type of goal will help you focus on what you want and you will be more likely to achieve it.

Next month, we'll talk about creating a plan of action to further assist in reaching goals.

“If a man is called a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven & earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well.’” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
