Stress Reduction for the Brain

Life's full of stress these days. SARS, West Nile virus, holidays coming up, Mad Cow Disease, strained relations with the United States… The list goes on and on. Sometimes the coping strategies you use to deal with stress don't seem to be working anymore. One highly effective way to handle stress is to determine which side of your brain is experiencing the stress and to respond with the opposite side of the brain.

Following are a couple of examples...

Perhaps you've spent the day handling financial transactions, balancing the cheque book or writing a proposal. Your left brain is fried!

To cope, turn to your right brain. Read poetry, listen to soothing music, work on an art/craft project for a while. This will give your left brain time to unwind.

Or, perhaps your stress is related to tense relations with a co-worker or family member, or something quite emotionally disturbing has happened. This has your right brain, the side that handles emotions, in dire straits.

To cope, engage your left brain. Balance your cheque book, figure out how to program the VCR/DVD player, organize your closet. These left brain activities will allow you time for your emotions to get on a more even keel.

Try this strategy. It will help to get you into a more balanced frame of mind.
