The
Career Transition Rollercoaster
Reflecting
on the past few months, I recognize that Dimension 11 was a
major factor, assisting me through a very difficult period.
The kindness and support
the coaching phone calls...and
the training sessions were invaluable services. Individual consulting
provided the opportunity to heal the soul, perfect the résumé
and the interview skills and ensure that I was able to sell
the authentic me.
- former Career Transition Client
You've
just heard you are no longer employed. How do you feel? Some have
a sense of relief. They were ready for something different and
this is the kick in the pants to go look for it. Some are devastated.
How will the bills be paid?...what's wrong with me?...people will
think I'm a failure. Some are angry. How dare they to let me go!...they
have no right!...I'll fight this!
No
matter what you are feeling, it's okay. Everyone goes through
some or all of those emotions when in this situation. It's perfectly
normal. Just be careful about how you act on those emotions.
You
are relieved, happy...
Great! Still, now is the time to sit back and really think about
what you want to do. School? New job, same field? New job, different
field? Move? Start your own business? There are so many options.
Think them through carefully. Look at the pros and cons before
you leap in with both feet. Then plan, research, plan, network,
plan, plan, plan. And enjoy!
You
are devastated...
Now's the time to rally all your supportive family and friends
around you. Take some time (a few days) to grieve your loss. Don't
begin to wallow in self-pity, though. That is totally non-productive.
Get up, dust yourself off and get back into it! Start contacting
your network. Polish up your résumé. Start your
job search, or start researching education or self-employment
options. Try to look at this as a little pothole on your road
to success.
You
are furious...
Again, this is a normal emotion. It can be a very destructive
emotion, too, if you don't keep it under control. Take some time
to cool off before doing anything. Don't burn bridges at your
former organization. That is a potential source of excellent networking
and referrals. Right now, you need a positive attitude. Anger
will rob you of that. Don't let this affect your future prospects.
In
this situation, wouldn't it be helpful if you had some experienced
help to guide you through the emotions and decision making that
must be done? More and more organizations are realizing the benefits
of this and are providing Career Transition services to employees
they have to let go. Career Counsellors assist people in dealing
with emotions, decisions and "stuff" that must be done.
Some of the services include résumé development,
interview and networking skills coaching and instruction on job
search techniques, as well as workshops on professional and personal
development.
Dimension
11 Ltd. provides these services. If you are going through a career
transition, or know something is coming in your organization,
talk to your employer about these services. Perhaps they can be
made available to you.
