ETHICS
— Credibility and Peace of Mind —

thically improper behaviour is something we hear about from news reports. When we do, we shrug our shoulders and assume this type of behaviour is typical of government or big business. Upon reflection, is this a fair assumption? Not really. Unethical behaviour occurs at every level of our society.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary cites ethics as "the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and moral duty and obligation" along with "the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group".

Most of us don't consciously apply ethical principles to our activities. Instead, we almost automatically react to the demands of our lives based on past experience and our needs. Once in a while, though, our inner voice or a flash of guilt lets us know we are in a grey area of conduct. When this happens, it's a timely warning and an opportunity to 'walk the talk' of our personal ethical code.

There's no such thing as 'The Ethical Code of Conduct' - a one size fits all version. It's up to each of us, individuals and businesses alike, to construct our own code. No two will be alike; but, there are guidelines that can work for everyone, including:

  • Understanding right from wrong and deciding how we ought to act;
  • Knowing that the end does not justify the means if we're not acting ethically;
  • Applying life's golden rule and treating others as we want to be treated;
  • Remembering that if something doesn't feel right, it likely isn't.

thical behaviour starts with a single person and radiates outward in its effect on our world and there are good reasons for living a consciously ethical life.

  • We strengthen our moral character.
  • We enhance our self esteem by doing the right thing.
  • Our reputation and credibility remain intact.

Perhaps the most important reason is living in a place of inner peace with a clear conscience.

CLIENT APPRECIATION

It's always a good idea to let your clients know you appreciate their business. Many companies do this at Christmastime.

Why not stand out from the rest and do it at another time of year, perhaps at Thanksgiving? Sending a card, gift or other appropriate item at this time will have a greater impact and it will be remembered more than if it is sent along with a hundred other things at a busy time of year.
