Find Your Purpose and Reap the Benefits

Each and every person has a purpose. The Dalai Lama said, "Our purpose in life is to be happy." We all want that, don't we? In our hustle and bustle world, though, it's sometimes difficult to realize we have a purpose. We don't have time to figure out what it is…we have to make a living, have relationships, learn things, relax sometimes, and just keep going, because that's what everyone else does, right?

Yes, everyday routines and responsibilities can get in the way of thinking about our purpose in life. But the benefits of knowing and working with your purpose are huge. For instance, you will:

  • find happiness and fulfillment
  • have more confidence in yourself
  • have focus in life and work
  • improve your career, or find a new and better one
  • make a real difference to yourself and others
  • reduce fear, stress, anxiety, worry about life and your career

So, how do you go about finding out what your purpose is? Well, don't expect to do this over night. It takes time, time that is well spent.

  • Everyday, take some time to think on past experiences and situations where you felt truly alive, like you had just accomplished something wonderful. These don't have to be earth shattering experiences; the important thing is how you felt at the time. What made it so wonderful?
  • Look at goals you have set in the past, ones you struggled with and ones you found enjoyable and easy to follow through on.
  • Think about the important things in your life, the things you couldn't do without.
  • Write all these things down, and start to make the connections.

This will give you clues as to your purpose, your personal mission statement. As you come to a clearer understanding of your purpose (and, remember, this can takes time), you will begin to work with it, in the decisions you make and the way you work and live. Then you will start to reap the benefits we discussed earlier, and the people around you will benefit, too.

Daily Survival Kit

A while back I received an email with a very interesting list of items we need to survive and thrive day-to-day. Here's the list, weird as it is:

  • Bandage
  • Candy kiss
  • Chewing gum
  • Eraser
  • Mint
  • Pencil
  • Rubber band
  • Tea bag
  • Toothpick

See what I mean? Weird...but when it's explained, it makes perfect sense!

Maybe you've seen this before and know what it's all about. But, if not, why don't you try to figure out why each item is necessary. Next month we'll fill you in on the details.
