A Convention Worth Remembering
ou've
all been to one...a snorer of a convention, where the only thing
you got from it was sleep deprivation, an ugly tote bag and a
new appreciation for people brave enough to heckle.
We
just attended the annual convention for CAPS (Canadian Association
of Professional Speakers) and, I'm happy to say, it was awesome.
The venue, the food, the networking, the sessions, all of it was
perfectly planned. We really have to give a big hand it to the
organizing committee.
Perhaps,
if you are ever involved in the daunting task of organizing a
convention, some of the ideas they employed could be of use to
you.
First,
they had high quality speakers...it was a speakers convention,
after all, so they really had no other options! The speakers addressed
issues that were of great importance to the people attending,
helping them advance their skills, careers and businesses.
Second,
there was a lot of entertainment interspersed with the learning.
To mention a few, there were professional whistlers (he even whistled
classical music
definitely something to see, or hear, I
suppose), a hypnotist (he had a lot of enthusiastic volunteers
these speakers definitely like the stage), and, in my opinion,
the highlight of the convention, the Convention Weaver. He summarized
the goings-on of the convention, turning it into a one-man musical
comedy. It really brought key points to mind, helped reinforce
some things that were learned, and was hilarious. That's one talented
guy!
Third,
the venue was comfortable, the staff were extremely helpful
and everything ran smoothly. The food was awesome, too,
something you definitely have to keep in mind when planning a
convention.
Fourth
is something they had at the convention last year. It is a specially
designed notebook for each attendee, with specific places
for to-do lists, business cards and ah-ha! ideas you don't want
to forget. It's a very convenient book to keep all your information
together.
Fifth,
they had a super convention wrap-up to relax, laugh, gab,
eat, drink, dance, relax some more...and a CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN.
What more could we ask?
We
did get a little tired, we did get an ug..., oops
, an extremely
handy tote bag, and, all in all, it was one of the best conventions
we've attended.
If
you would like some help organizing your convention, give us a
call. We offer convention planning services, a speakers bureau
with access to hundreds of speakers on any topic under the sun,
and a lot of great ideas to make your convention a convention
worth remembering.

Year End Review
s
you plan for the coming year, personally and professionally, look
back at this past year and ask yourself a few questions. The answers
will help you determine what to change and what to keep doing.
- Did
I reach my goals?
- What
accomplishment am I most proud of?
- Did
I have any fun?
- What
did I like the least?
- What
would I like to improve?
All
the best in the future!
