You
Don't Have to be a "Born Leader" to be a Leader
 It
may seem you are either born a leader or you will never be one.
Not true! Vince Lombardi said becoming a leader takes hard work
(and we're not talking about the hard work your mother goes through
giving birth to you). What about those of us who feel inadequate?
Through our own hard work and initiative, we can become leaders,
too.
Think
of the qualities leaders display. True leaders must be:
Assertive
- leaders know they must be prepared to stand firm for and defend
their beliefs and decisions, even when they are unpopular.
Cooperative
- leaders look for ways to make things work for everyone, not
just themselves. They believe in give and take.
Courageous
- leaders know that sometimes their decisions backfire or are
unpopular, which can bring a lot of negativity their way. But
with courage and conviction, they will carry on.
Honest
- leaders tell the truth, admit their own mistakes, are direct
and to-the-point without being harsh or untactful.
Responsible
- leaders don't just do the jobs that get the glory, they do whatever
needs to be done.
Persuasive
- leaders are able to bring people on board by having a vision
and convincing others of its rightness.
Positive,
up-beat, inspirational - leaders feel this way themselves
and are able to instil these feelings in other people.
Resourceful
- leaders can work with whatever resources are at hand to successfully
finish the job.
Supportive
- leaders know that helping other people grow and succeed is in
the best interests of the organization, association, family, and
everyone in it.
These
nine qualities we can all learn and develop. Just work at them,
one at a time. Then, the next time you are in a position of leadership,
whether at work, at home, or in your volunteer work, you can step
up and be a leader all will be willing and eager to follow.
