Dismissal With Dignity

If you are in a management position, you most likely will have to fire someone at some point. There's probably not many of you who look forward to that time with relish. Usually the thought will put a knot of dread in your stomach and sheen of sweat on your brow. That's good, as it shows you have compassion and don't want to unnecessarily hurt someone.

Recently, there was an article in the paper about a manager who fired someone by walking into her office, putting a note on her desk and leaving...no words were spoken. How is that for cold and unfeeling? What a terrible thing to do, no matter how that employee had been acting!

Letting someone go is part of your job as manager, and needs to be done as professionally as possible, so both of you come out of it with your dignity intact. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • always treat the person being let go with dignity, respect and compassion, no matter what the reason is for the dismissal
  • put yourself in that person's shoes and think how you would like to be treated if the situation were reversed
  • take no more than 5-10 minutes
  • be clear and direct, no small talk about the family and weather
  • let the person have his/her say without giving the impression that arguing or negotiating may, in some way, change the decision
  • be prepared with all necessary severance papers
  • do not offer further assistance -- "Let me know if there is anything I can do" -- if you are not prepared to give it...a good reference, contacts for finding a new job, etc.

“It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it” is so true in this situation. Do yourself, and those you supervise, a favour. Prepare for this difficult situation ahead of time and you will perform this duty with dignity for yourself and the person being let go.
