Personal Leadership

“Personal leadership is the ongoing process of keeping your vision and values before you and aligning your life to be congruent with those most important things.” — Stephen Covey

To be truly successful in life, we need to start with ourselves, take control of ourselves. We must develop personal leadership, no matter what our age, or gender or station in life. Here are some things to think about when doing this:

  • Through self examination, discover your personal values and principles
  • Apply these in all aspects of life - not just in business, or just spiritually, but in everything
  • Refer to these values and principles when faced with decisions and challenges - this will help to ensure you continue on down the path you have set for yourself; often you will know before the situation arises what you will do

Personal leadership will be a compass that guides you to become the person you want to be, doing the things you want to do, all in harmony with your values and principles. We all need a compass. Life is so hectic we can sometimes find ourselves doing things without even thinking about it, things that really don't get us anywhere or accomplish what we want, they just keep us "busy". You've probably experienced yourself doing that in your personal and business life. Who has time to waste like that?

As you develop personal leadership, you will become more focussed, have greater self-knowledge and self-confidence, and will be more effective in all areas of life. Of course, this translates into greater success.

To learn more on this topic, and to begin or continue your own personal leadership development, we highly recommend the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

Invest in Yourself

Just last weekend a couple of us were down in San Francisco at a workshop. One of the segments was about investing in yourself, and how much you were willing to give as an investment. There were a lot of different results that came from that exercise, some surprising. So often we'll give our time, attention, efforts, money so our children will have a diverse learning experience. Or, we'll give those things in our charity or volunteer work. Often, though, we'll totally ignore our own needs and interests.

Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't do these things for our children or our community. However, we should - need - to do that for ourselves, too. As we become more educated, experienced and diverse, we become better equipped to help others. When we can fit some of the things we love to do into our daily lives, we're happier for it, and want to spread the happiness around.

What are you willing to invest in yourself? Think about what satisfies, inspires, fulfills, creates joy, rewards, challenges, teaches YOU. Plan a way to include those things in your life, and do it. It will take time, effort, attention and money, but we can always find that for the things important to us. Make YOU important to you, and there'll be more of you to give to others.
