Good
Change or Bad?
It's Your Decision
Recently I spoke with a wonderful old gentleman
and the topic of change came up. His response to it was, "I
don't change
I'm old, Italian and Catholic. That's what
I've always been and I don't change."
Well, obviously he has changed, and he's dealt
with it just fine. He's old, used to be young. He was single,
then married, then widowed. He's moved a few times in his life.
He went to school, then work, then retired. Who knows how many
adjustments he had to make during the course of his career. Changes...all
of them, and some were unwanted. But they happened and he coped,
adjusted and moved on.
What are you like when faced with change? There
are so many people just like this man, who think they don't want
change and resist it, in their work and personal lives. Is that
you? One thing to remember is you are not totally powerless when
it comes to change. You handle it fabulously all the time, without
even realizing it. Still, there are decisions you can make regarding
the change, and these decisions can improve or impede your adjustment
to the changes going on.
In Cathy Cassidy's book, Change Accountability,
she outlines Six Keys of Change which can help the change process
and the decisions you make. These keys are:
C = Consider the change and its impact
on you
H = Hear and listen to what is actually going on
A = Analyze your attitude about the change
N = Notice your and others' negative behaviours
G = Get Going-Make the Change or Move On
E = Evaluate your decision and actions
As you go through these steps when faced with
change, any change, you put yourself in control of the situation,
rather than allowing the situation to control you. Your decision
to be in control is the key to a smooth transition to whatever
new things are happening in your life.

Quotes This Month
All mankind is divided into three classes: those that
are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.
~Benjamin Franklin~
...we come to beginnings
only at the end.
~William Bridges~
...gradual change is
usually more fruitful in the long run than is forced, ultra-aggressive
upheaval. Undertaken wisely, steady transitions cultivate authenticity,
groundedness, and virtues-like patience, compassion (for self
and others), and perseverance.
