Team Building 101

Effective teamwork is a basic key to organizational success. It's the only way anything will be accomplished. Sometimes, though, building strong, cooperative teams is easier said than done. Try some of these quick, common-sense steps to begin the process of building a cohesive team:

  • Clarify each member's role and responsibility, and ensure all know and understand the team's objective.
  • Cooperate with each other to reach the common goal; freely communicate all necessary information, update each other on progress, ask questions.
  • All team members are chosen for their specific abilities and talents; don't look at each other as rivals. You each bring your own personal strengths to the team and you are all valuable and needed.
  • Treat all team members with dignity and respect, no matter what their role or task. Simple things like "please", "thank you", and "that's a great idea" make all the difference.
  • Support each other in triumphs and failures, because both will come. Recognize and reward accomplishments.
  • Understanding each other is important. One excellent way to do this is through assessments and profiling. These will give in-depth information about each member. Then it will be easier to understand how best to communicate and work with each other.

There are team building activities and exercises that can be used to overcome problems, and build communication and effectiveness. But why not start with some of the basics first and see the good results they can bring when all team members apply them.

Clutter Inhibits Productivity

Lately, my desk has turned into the Leaning Tower of Paper. I can tell that it's affecting my work. Last week I agonized for days over an article I had to write; I couldn't string two words together coherently. Finally I went to an empty desk in our office and worked there. I had the article written, edited and ready to go in two hours. What gives?

Well, sitting at my desk now, I see so many things that need to be done it's completely distracting. It's hard to concentrate when there are 20 other things competing for attention. On the clean desk, there was nothing else to look at or obsess over, and concentration was easy.

I guess that means it's time to clean off my desk. Keeping only my current project and essential tools at hand should lessen the feelings of stress and heighten productivity. The rest of the paper and clutter can go in files and drawers, easy to get at but not always in sight.

I guess that means I'll have to clean out the drawers first… sigh… Oh well, spring's here, it's time for spring cleaning, and I have to start somewhere, right?!
