Let me introduce you to John Knight, the Vice President of Dimension 11. This month, we’re celebrating a significant milestone in his life. He’s been working for 50 years! I don’t know if I can say he’s loved every minute of it...my nose might grow so long it breaks my monitor! What I can say is he’s enjoying a satisfying and rich career, has made a deep impression on many people, and, yes, is having a good time along the way.
John’s the husband of Sherry (our President), father of five, grandfather of nine, friend of many. He started his career at Coca-Cola when he was 17 years old. His first job was as a trucker’s helper. He was a good worker, and must have made a good impression. Steadily through the years, he moved up within the organization. He was a Sales Representative, Supervisor of the Calgary Team, General Manager, and finally Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Saskatchewan.
People have fond memories of working with John. He was then, as he is now, positive and up-building, helping to bring out the best in the people he works with and leads. One person saved a memo he sent out in 1992 because it was an excellent lesson for life, not just work. In part it said, “Success becomes an attitude and only you can develop that within yourself. Remember to dream big dreams. …Enrich your life with joy and happiness by excelling in all that you do. …Enjoy! That is what life is about, what careers are about.” That’s still John’s philosophy today.
After he left Coca-Cola in 1993, he became Vice President of Dimension 11 Ltd., a position he still holds. He’s also President of ITG Staffing Solutions. Even after 50 years, he’s not slowing down (sometimes he says he wants to, but we don’t believe him). You’ll see him around town in his spiffy duds, schmoozing and getting things done (anything to keep him from having to sit at his desk)!
Throughout his career, John has been very active in his community. Right now he’s the Editor of Gray Matters, the newsletter sent out by the Saskatchewan Seniors’ Mechanism. He’s President of his community association, Vice-Chair of Relay for Life, and a leader in his church.
It’s well known that John has deep spiritual roots. As a friend said about John, he always maintains a high level of integrity and this allows people to trust him and follow his leadership. This is coupled with compassion, which is evident in his dealings with people.
John is a down-to-earth guy who makes friends with everyone he meets. He’s always been able to bring out the best in people, which in turn brings out the best in an organization. From setting record attendance levels, increasing profits, and creating attainable visions for his organizations to leading his team to attain the highest level of market share in North America, John has demonstrated his passion and ability to succeed and help others excel. Those attributes are still in evidence today.
Congratulations, John. Your life and career are a testament to a fine man. We’re all pleased and proud to know you. May continued success and happiness be yours in the years to come.
