Pick Me Up When I’m Feeling Down

Frazzled...overwhelmed...exhausted? Are these some words that perfectly describe how you feel at this time of year? Wouldn’t you rather feel happy...thankful...serene... contented? You probably experience all of these feelings; unfortunately, sometimes the negative overshadows the positive and the joy gets sucked out of life.

John, our vice president, is always coming up with sayings and quotes appropriate to the situation. He has those little motivational books and pictures all over the place. These sayings help him keep positive “when life gives him lemons.”

They are quick, positive reminders he has filed away in his head, and written in a book. Here are a few of his favourites. Perhaps they will help you change your perspective and boost your spirits:

  • Be modest. A lot was accomplished before you were born.
  • Be willing to lose a battle in order to win the war.
  • Look for the good in people.
  • When complimented, a sincere thank you is the only response needed.
  • Don’t waste time grieving over past mistakes. Learn from them and move on.
  • Loosen up! Relax! Except for rare life-and-death matters, nothing is as important as it first seems.
  • Don’t worry that you can’t give your kids the best of everything. Give them the best of you.
  • Measure people by the size of their hearts, not the size of their bank accounts.
  • Be kinder than necessary.

These really work for John. Now, my personal favourite is, “The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.” Hey, whatever works, right?

Be Kinder than Necessary

When we’re frenzied and rushed, our focus can narrow to just ourselves and what we need. But it’s doing kind things for others, even when we feel stretched, that will help us get our balance back.

  • Pick up food or medicine for a sick friend or neighbour...then they can stay home, get better, and keep the germs to themselves.
  • Help someone carry their bags to their car or house when they are overloaded.
  • Shovel someone’s sidewalk.
  • Plug someone’s parking metre when it’s running out.

Employee Rewards

At an employee meeting this summer, we each took turns telling one thing we really appreciated about the person sitting to our left. It started the meeting with a positive vibe. We learned things about some of the others that we may not have known. And it’s rewarding to learn how we positively impact others at work—it sticks with you for a long time.

Accolades

“I enjoy your notes and have used several of your ideas and suggestions. I appreciate that it is a one pager, so I get it read...I include the page in my office communication binder that is read by all my staff. Sometimes the info is brought up in our staff meetings. Thanks.”—Linda Swehla

Quotes

“When someone does something good, applaud! You will make two people happy.”—Samuel Goldwyn

“If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Then quit. No use being a fool about it.”—Scott Adams in Dilbert
